It reads like tax code and getting through the book and finally to the table will be a labor of love or curiosity. It is not a sit down and wing it kind of book. Because of this, the rulebook is, to say the least, robust. Game Experience:Ĭivilization is a solidly developed game and has been so for a long time. Players migrate populations and fortify areas against their neighbors. While the first four epochs require players to merely have a number of civilization cards, the final epoch requires players to achieve 1200 to 1400 points (depending on the culture) in civilization cards to win the game. The progress chart splits play into 5 epochs. In the end though, the real value of these cards are the points they grant towards the progress chart for each player. ![]() While most of the civilization cards are prerequisites or discounts toward more valuable civilization cards, some of them grant extra abilities such as extra movement, conflict benefits, or resistance to calamities. The real pioneering mechanism that Tresham introduced with Civilization was in the trading of these commodity/trade cards for civilization cards. Mixed in with the trade cards though are calamity cards (Volcanic Eruption, Earthquakes, Flood, etc) which, unsurprisingly, can wreak havoc on the board later in the turn. Cities are used to generate commodity/trade cards from the nine different commodity types for players. Populations can also be converted to cities, but if they aren’t, and the maximum population for an area is reached, that area revolts (i.e. Each turn these populations grow, migrate, enter into conflict with one another, overwhelm a geographic area, and/or revolt. Players start by choosing an ancient culture and placing their starting populations in different areas of the ancient world. There are many steps to a single turn (THIRTEEN) and while they aren’t difficult in practice, they seem to be difficult to communicate and visualize without your hands on the paper.
